Applying a VDR System

Applying a VDR strategy is not as straightforward as just installing one. It requires a whole lot of preparing and consideration. The first step is to select a ideal VDR.

The VDR is usually an integral part of the vessel’s safety systems and is created to collect, digitize, compress and store data from many different sensors aboard the vessel. The data is then protected in a tamper-proof storage unit which can withstand the ultimate shock, effects, pressure and heat which may be connected with marine situations such as fires, collisions or perhaps sinking boats.

A VDR is a great tool with respect to identifying the main cause of an accident and makes a major contribution to maritime safety. A VDR can also be used pertaining to other responsibilities such as large weather harm analysis, overall performance efficiency monitoring and team training.

Using a VDR for Digital Forensics

Even though all the regular steps in digital forensic finalizing (collecting, maintenance, survey, evaluation, analysis and reconstruction) may be applied to VDRs, all their specialized and non-standard format present different challenges. This is especially the case where VDRs are used to record data from an array of sensors and electrical websites signals.

Nevertheless, the main aim of digital forensics in VDRs is to understand the root data. This involves a mix of knowledge of how VDRs job and of the specialised weird codecs they use to store their data.
